Thank you Dr. Jane Goodall for the Grant!
Successfully reused 28,300 batteries
Saved 1470 pounds of batteries!!
Freshkills Park is the largest park to be developed in New York City in over 100 years. It is also  the site of the Fresh Kills Landfill, which was the largest landfill in the world prior to its closing in 2001. Since then, the area is being developed as a wildlife haven and a park for recreation.

In 2016 on a discovery trip to Freshkills Park, we learnt how batteries can harm the environment and decided to do something about it.

Batteries make up 20% of the household hazardous materials in American landfills.
As the battery casing corrodes, chemicals leach into the soil and make their way into our water supply.
Eventually they reach the ocean and harm our marine wild life too. Infact, they adversely affect our entire ecosystem.

Please reuse, repurpose batteries, dispose responsibly and NEVER forget to recycle
Thanks!

HOW DID WE GET THE IDEA

We were at our doctors’ office for a check up and noticed that her assistant would remove batteries from monitors and throw them away. The batteries  had only been used for a few hours. The assistant said that they were safe to reuse but cannot be used in the office because monitors need a fresh batteries to work efficiently.

HOW DID WE DO IT?
  • We supplied offices with battery collection bins.
  • Collected partially used batteries.
  • Weighed, counted and inspected our collection.
  • Sorted them by size and company.

  • Filled them in envelopes.
  • Decorated the envelopes.
  • Wrote a message about recycling.
  • Handed them out to be used in remote control devices.
  • Initiated a conversation about the importance of reusing and recycling.

Since 2016, we have distributed 4,710 packets of batteries
As of 5-25-2021, we have successfully reused 28,260 batteries

Since 2016, we have distributed over 800 packets of batteries!!

  • We have successfully reused 24,000 batteries

  • We have taught numerous people about the harmful effects batteries have on the environment

Teaching people about Reusing and Recycling as we give batteries away

We also encouraged people to use options like Solar power and rechargable batteries
