In 2020, Change Will Happen launched a COVID-19 response to support healthcare workers and communities during a time of severe PPE shortages and strained hospital resources. Through two connected efforts, we produced and delivered thousands of pieces of protective equipment and also uplifted frontline staff with handmade thank-you cards, letters, and drawings. The project helped protect doctors, nurses, technicians, and community members, reduced barriers for outpatient offices to stay open safely, and reminded healthcare workers that their sacrifices were seen, valued, and supported.
We created and distributed PPE for healthcare workers and community members, including N95-grade style masks made from Halyard material, plus gowns, face shields, surgical caps, and shoe covers. Our work included both producing items ourselves and coordinating donations and purchases through community supporters and microgrants.
We organized volunteers and partners to source materials, cut and stitch masks and gowns, assemble PPE kits, and deliver supplies to hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, places of worship, local businesses, and community members.
We collected handmade thank-you cards, poems, drawings, and letters from children and families and delivered them to doctors, nurses, technicians, and other staff. We provided clear guidelines to keep messages positive and to protect privacy.
We also accepted emailed messages when mailing was not possible, printed them when we could, and included them in weekly deliveries to boost morale and remind healthcare workers that their sacrifices were seen, valued, and supported.
This effort was powered by volunteers and supported by community microgrants and partners. We are grateful to:
